Sea Kayaking in Abel Tasman Marine Reserve

Departs:Daily at 9.00am from Kaiteriteri Beach or Marahau Beach from 18 October 2001 to 25 April 2002

Abel Tasman Astrolabe & Beyond Day Kayak

ITINERARY:
Meet your guide and join the 9.00am launch cruise to Onetahuti Bay. Discuss the days activities as you cruise this magnificent coastline.

On arrival at Onetahuti Bay a full training session and safety briefing is completed, then onto the water. As you kayak through the marine reserve to Tonga Island, the objectives and successes of establishing the Marine Reserve in this area will be explained.

Tonga Island is the site of the Abel Tasman's largest seal colony - Yes, there are always seals to be seen - but it's their home - we strictly follow the marine mammal viewing guidelines set by the Department of Conservation. Sea birds working the shoals of fish or resting on the rocky outcrops add to the experience. You may even see some of the penguins that nest here.

Return to a sheltered cove for our lunch. After a relaxing break, snorkelling equipment is provided for those that want to explore the marine life below the surface.

Depending on your interests the afternoon can be spent paddling and sailing to the remote coves and lagoons hidden from the day visitors. Or explore the tracks through lush native forest and beaches by foot - the choice is yours.

Late afternoon we rejoin the launch - recount the days adventure as we relax on-board while cruising back to Marahau Beach or Kaiteriteri Beach.
