activity holidays new zealand

New Zealand has one third of its land mass as allocated National Parks and reserves cared for by our Department of Conservation. With 18,000 kilometres of coastline, 14 National Parks and more than 5 million hectares to care for and protect, this Department protects our native and endangered species, marine research, relocating our precious species, maintaining our well treaded track walkways, making our environment a great place where we all visit and enjoy.

We hope you will also enjoy the beauty and scenery we have all helped prepare and preserve for our future generations.

Graded difficulty=2 Abel Tasman

The Abel Tasman National Park Walk is one of the most popular walks in New Zealand for locals and visitors alike. Regarded as an excellent introduction to walking holidays, the mild climate and easy to negotiate track make this a most popular adventure. The area is distinguished for its golden sand beaches, tranquil and secluded bays and safe waters. Your adventure begins with a coach transfer from Nelson, then you will walk from Awaroa to Marahau over five days, spending two nights at Awaroa Homestead Lodge and two nights at Torrent Bay Lodge. During this walk there is plenty of time to swim in the startling blue waters, try sea kayaking, take the dinghy for a row or go fishing. As a one-way walk, you will either begin or finish with a scenic launch cruise along the coastline. A light day pack is provided for lunch, snacks and camera etc. Each day your luggage will be transported by water taxi for you.

A three day option is available for those with limited time. This spends one night in each of the two lodges.

Ball Pass Mount Cook Trekking

Mount Cook National Park offers New Zealand's most spectacular alpine scenery. With all but one of its 29 peaks over 3000m, it is New Zealand's climbing mecca. Most peaks are accessible only to experienced mountaineers. However, hiking or trekking is possible close to Mount Cook on the guided Ball Pass Trek.
Ball Pass is a demanding 3 day trek which crosses the Mount Cook Range from the Tasman to the Hooker Valley. The route follows the Ball Ridge, vis a vis the Caroline Face of Mount Cook, and overlooks the Tasman Glacier. Guided hikers spend two nights at the fully furbished Caroline Hut at 1830m/6000ft.
Breathtaking views of Mount Cook and New Zealand's highest mountains. Rich alpine flora and unique bird life. Moderate snow and glacier travel. You need to have previous hiking, backpacking, tramping or bushwalking experience.

Graded difficulty=4 Heaphy Track

The attraction of the Heaphy Track is the rich diversity of the landscape, from the nikau palms fringing the West Coast beaches to the beech forests and the red tussock grassland at Gouland Downs. The track which crosses the Kahurangi National Park is 77km long. The remoteness of the area has made it the refuge for native birds and animals that have disappeared from inhabited areas. Named after Charles Heaphy, a surveyor who spent many years in the area, the route pioneered is still in use today. You will reach the highest point on the track of 915 metres on the first day when crossing the Perry Saddle. At this high level the trees are stunted and many sub-alpine plants will be seen.

A feature of the limestone caves and arches at Gouland Downs is a stream which flows out of a cave creating a waterfall. Expect to see tui, bellbirds, fantails, tomtits and the native pigeon kereru. During the evening kiwi may be heard. Wall amongst red beech, rimu, southern rata, kahikatea and incredible, sub-tropical vegetation on one of New Zealand's greatest yet lesser known walks.

Kaikoura Wilderness 3 Day Walk

The Kaikoura Wilderness Walkway traverses the untamed wilderness of the Seaward Kaikoura Mountains through native forest, riverbeds and dramatic alpine terrain. Overlooked by one of the highest peaks of them all - the legendary “Te Ao Whekere” or “World Of The Gods”, this track, along with the expert interpretation provided by our guides, provides an extraordinary insight into the evolution and biodiversity of New Zealand’s world-famous landscapes.
known for its dramatic diversity over a relatively short distance over two days and a total of 17kms. The track takes you through stands of manuka and kanuka, untouched beech forests and pristine, ancient totara forest. There is a huge array of plant life and you will also enjoy the amazing wildlife on show, from the birds – rifleman, warbler, tomtit, falcon, pipit, NZ robin, white-eye, fantail, kereru, kingfisher and more – to larger animals such as chamois and deer. The area is also well known as a habitat of the black-eyed gecko and Kaikoura scree weta, and contains one of only two nesting colonies in the world of the endangered seabird the Hutton’s shearwater .
