Graded difficulty=3 Tongariro Crossing and Cultural Journey

Tongariro National Park is a special place. In 1887, the paramount chief of the time, Horonuku Te Heu Heu Tukino IV gifted the lands of the three volcanic peaks of Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe to the crown so they could be preserved for all New Zealanders. This original gift created New Zealand's first National Park which now covers an area of more than 80,000 hectares and has a World Heritage classification. The Tongariro Trek has you returning to the comfort and splendid elegance of the Bayview Chateau Tongariro each evening. The Bayview Chateau Tongariro opened in 1929 and is known as the Grand Old Lady of the Mountain due to its classic elegance. The Tongariro Trek takes you onto the volcanic plateau to experience amazing views plus flora and fauna unusual for New Zealand. On Day 3 you embark on the Tongariro Crossing which is often called the finest one day walk in New Zealand.

In recent times, international headlines have focused on Mount Ruapehu as the mountain has displayed recent signs of renewed volcanic activity.

Graded difficulty=3 Whirinaki Rainforest Guided Walk

The Whirinaki Forest Park is one of the great rainforests of the world - home to the giant Kahikatea, Rimu, Matai, Miro and Totara - rare examples of native timber forests that once covered the central North Island. The park covers 60,000 hectares and it is though that forests like this once covered the super continent of Gondwanaland over 150 million years ago. Some of the oldest trees are 65 metres high and just over 1000 years old.

In addition to the trees the bird life is diverse and abundant with the dense podocarps hosting high numbers of rare birds. There are many unique and rare species of plants and insects too making these trips of special interest to the wildlife enthusiast.
This region has been inhabited for over two centuries by the Ngai Whare (local Maori tribe) and your guide enjoys sharing his or her knowledge of the legends and myths of the area along with the medical uses of the native bush and trees.
